How To Prepare For Your STUDIO Newborn Session | jervis bay

Whether you’re in the thick of the newborn haze or still counting down the days until your baby arrives, congratulations. You’re in a season like no other, and I’m so honoured to be part of it. These early days are full of love, exhaustion, wonder, and change, and I want your newborn session to feel like a moment to exhale, not just another thing on your to-do list.

As a newborn photographer (and a neonatal nurse and mum of two myself), I’ve designed this experience to be calm, comfortable, and simple. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know before your in-studio newborn session at my natural light studio in St Georges Basin, near Jervis Bay.

If you’re wondering what to bring, what to wear, or how to make the most of this time, this guide is for you.

#1 TIMING

The first few weeks of your baby’s life is magic. Of course all of the weeks are magic, but during these few weeks, newborns are squishy, flexible, sleep more, and are still adjusting to the world outside of the womb. Often, their skin is still clear, and their bodies are shaped as if they’re still in utero – making it easier to get them into position. In order for us to get organised for a shoot this soon after their birthday, I’ll be working off your due date. The ideal time for newborn photos is between 7 and 21 days after birth.

When you book, we’ll pencil in a date based on your due date, usually around 10 to 14 days later. Once your baby arrives, we’ll confirm the session date together. I only take on a limited number of newborn sessions each month so that there’s always room for flexibility.

#2 STYLING

For beautifully timeless photos, I recommend neutral and muted tones. Think whites, creams, oat, soft blush, grey or earthy colours.

  • For mums: flowy dresses, soft knits, or whatever feels most like you

  • For partners: fitted basics like a plain tee, henley or button-up in neutral colours

  • For baby: I have a curated collection of wraps, blankets and knits that photograph beautifully

After booking, you’ll receive a full styling guide, along with a discount code for Mama Rentals if you’d like to hire something special.

#3 What to Pack for the Studio

You don’t need to bring much. The studio is fully equipped with everything we’ll need. Here’s a simple checklist:

  • Nappies, wipes, and a spare outfit for baby

  • Milk (breast or bottle)

  • A dummy (optional, but helpful for settling)

  • Snacks or quiet activities for older siblings

  • Any sentimental items you’d like included, such as a special wrap or blanket

The studio space is warm and quiet, with everything set up for you to relax and feel comfortable.

#4 INCLUDE THE WHOLE FAMILY

Newborn sessions are about the whole family, not just baby. Partners and siblings are warmly welcomed.

We usually begin with family and sibling portraits. If little ones are young, feel free to bring a support person to take them out once they’re finished so we can focus on baby without distraction. I keep sessions light and relaxed so everyone feels comfortable.

#5 on the day MAGIC

Your session will usually run for about 1.5 to 2 hours. We take everything at baby’s pace and allow plenty of time for feeding, changing, and settling.

I’ll gently guide you through the session and help with positioning. No stiff posing, no pressure. Just simple, honest moments that reflect what this season really feels like.

Come as you are. Hair messy, baby unsettled, bags under your eyes. You’re welcome here.
