How To Get Your Kids (and Husbands) To Enjoy The Photoshoot

If you've ever attempted a family photoshoot with kids in tow, you know that it can feel like herding cats on a sugar rush. But fret not, my friends, for today, we're diving into the delightful world of kid wrangling at photoshoots. Spoiler alert: there's no secret recipe for perfect behavior—just lots of fun!

#1 KIDS WILL BE KIDS

First things first, let's embrace the fact that kids will be kids. They're tiny tornadoes of energy, curiosity, and boundless imagination. So, forget about the idea of them standing still and smiling on cue like miniature statues. That's not their jam, and honestly, it's a tad boring, isn't it?

#2 DISTRACTIONS ARE YOUR ALLIES

Distractions, my friends, are your secret weapons. Bring along their favourite toy or a bag of snacks. Make silly faces, tell funny stories, or have a mini dance party in between shots. Distractions not only keep them engaged but also bring out their natural expressions. While we adults might be fixated on perfect poses, kids often find joy in the simple things, like sniffing a flower or chatting with their imaginary friends. Let them! These moments are gold. They showcase their personalities and create candid, heart-warming shots that you'll cherish forever.

#3 DON'T STRESS ABOUT PERFECTION

It's easy to get caught up in the quest for perfection, but remember that the most cherished moments are often imperfect ones. Embrace the messiness, the fidgeting, and the occasional grumpiness. These real moments reflect your family's authenticity and love. At the end of the day, a family photoshoot is not just about the photos; it's about creating lasting memories with your loved ones. Celebrate the experience and the time spent together. The laughter, the bonding, and the shared moments are what truly matter.

#4 SNACKS SNACKS SNACKS

Picture this: You're in the middle of a family photoshoot, and suddenly, a meltdown is on the horizon. The culprit? Hunger-induced "hanger."

Snacks go a long way to keeping everyone happy!! Just be mindful to pack snacks that aren’t messy. Crackers, apples, muesli bars are often easy and clean!

#5 HYPE UP THE EXPERIENCE

The lead-up to a photoshoot can make or break the vibe—especially for reluctant participants (looking at you, husbands). So here’s the trick: talk about the photoshoot like it’s an adventure, not a chore. For kids, it could be “we’re going on a treasure hunt at the beach!” or “you get to play with Steph and run wild while Mum and Dad cuddle!” Hype it up like you would a trip to the zoo or a birthday party.

As for the grown-up child (ahem, your partner)—keep it light. Let him know it's not three hours of awkward posing. It’s actually pretty relaxed, and all he really has to do is show up, smile, and love on his people. (A bribe in the form of post-session coffee, beer, or burgers doesn’t go astray either.)

#6 TRUST YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER

This one's big. Once you're in the session, trust that I have seen it all—from epic toddler meltdowns to shy kids hiding behind legs and even the occasional wardrobe malfunction. We're not just snapping photos; we're reading the room, finding the best light, watching for your child’s cues, and keeping things moving in a way that feels natural and relaxed.

You don’t need to direct, stress, or apologise for your child being themselves. I want them to show me their spark—and sometimes that means jumping in puddles or making fart noises. That’s the stuff that makes magic.

If you show up ready to enjoy each other—snacks in hand, expectations low, and hearts open—then your session will be a success. The magic isn’t in perfect hair or matching outfits. It’s in the way you feel when you’re wrapped up in your people. That’s what we’re here to photograph.

And hey—if nothing else, you'll have some great stories to tell over dinner.

Let’s make some magic ✨

Steph xx
